Activities
The aim of the State Philharmonic is to present the achievements of the national musical culture in the highest artistic level; to cherish and create the culture of professional arts and traditions, to perform the pieces of the classical and foreign composers, to convey the musical cultural values of the world, to develop, to form and pander publics’ need for the professional arts and music. The concert season of Kaunas State Philharmonic lasts from September to June. There are 530 seats in the Great Hall, and 60 seats in the Small Hall. Kaunas State Philharmonic arranges around 160-200 concerts per year. During summer, from June to September, Pažaislis Music Festival takes place. Kaunas State Philharmonic constantly arranges symphonic, chamber, jazz, contemporary music concerts, music afternoons for the whole family, educational programmes for pupils, festivals, thematic concert cycles. Since 1990, the International Festival of Young Musicians – “Kaunas” – has become a tradition. E. Grieg and M.K.Čiurlionis Music Festival is being held since 1998, together with Hordaland County Council of Norway. Since 1996, the internationally acclaimed Pažaislis Music Festival is held during summer; together with Kaunas Department of Lithuanian Composers’ Union, the Contemporary Music Festival “Up-Close” is being organised. The concerts are held not only in Kaunas, but also in all regions of Lithuania. The significant role in Kaunas State Philharmonic concert activity is played by the Kaunas State Choir (art director and chief conductor Prof. Petras Bingelis), which repertoire covers more than 120 monumental vocal-instrumental pieces. State Philharmonic actively collaborates with foreign performers and concert agencies. The International Festival of Young Musicians – “Kaunas” – gathered around nearly 200 young performers from 40 countries of the world, during 19 years of existence. The annual Pažaislis Music Festival presents the concerts of the most famous soloists, musical, and chamber ensembles. Since 1988, Kaunas State Choir participates in the most remarkable international festivals: Bordeaux Spring and Mediterranean Sea fetivals, Reims (France), the Schleswig-Holstein Festival and the Festival of the Countries of Middle Europe (Germany) and many others. The choir collaborated with many famous orchestras, it is acknowledged internationally.
Organisational Structure
Since 1996, Justinas Krėpšta has served as the director of the Concert Institution Kaunas State Philharmonic Society (KSPS). The concert activities is formed by the advisory body - Arts Council. Concert Institution KSPS employs 116 people.
