KAUNAS STATE PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY – THE HOUSE OF CLASSICAL MUSIC

This historical house was finished in 1928, under the project of architect Edmund Fryk. The Palace of Justice and the Parliament opened its doors there. The top of the colonnade was decorated with gilded letters in Latin “JUSTITIA EST FUNDAMENTUM REGNORUM” (“Justice is Fundamental to Reign“). In 1936, on the 1st of September, an Opening meeting of Parliament took place in the Great Hall.

In 1961, the part of the building and the Great Hall was conveyed to the Department of Kaunas, of LSSR National Philharmonic Society. In 2006, under the decision of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, the department of Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society has become the independent concert institution – Kaunas State Philharmonic Society. In 2008, on the 1st of October, the audience was invited to the renovated, new and shining Kaunas State Philharmonic building.

The concert season of Kaunas State Philharmonic lasts from September to June. Kaunas State Philharmonic arranges around 160-200 concerts per year. During summer, from June to September, Pažaislis Music Festival takes place.

Kaunas State Philharmonic constantly arranges symphonic, chamber, jazz, contemporary music concerts, music afternoons for the whole family, educational programmes for pupils, festivals, thematic concert cycles. Since 1990, the International Festival of Young Musicians – “Kaunas” – has become a tradition. E. Grieg and M.K.Čiurlionis Music Festival is being held since 1998, together with Hordaland County Council of Norway. Since 1996, the internationally acclaimed Pažaislis Music Festival is held during summer, in various Lithuanian heritage objects; together with Kaunas Department of Lithuanian Composers’ Union, the Contemporary Music Festival “Up-Close” is being organised.
